DUNNE, LYNDA HERRING, age 82, of Sea Cliff, New York, passed away peacefully on January 29th, 2026, after a period of declining health. Lynda was born in Snow Hill, North Carolina, on June 10, 1943, to James Carson Herring and Isabel Knight Herring. Lynda was predeceased in death by her beloved husband, James Lawrence Dunne, in 2023 and her beloved brother, Jerone Carson Herring, in 2025. Lynda is survived by her son, James, daughter-in-law, Allison, numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and her beloved grand-puppy Arthur.
Raised in North Carolina, Lynda graduated from Snow Hill High School (1961) and went on to obtain a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Tennessee (1965). After graduating, Lynda moved to Houston, Texas, and began working as an executive with Delta Airlines in April 1966. Lynda continued working for Delta Airlines until her retirement in 2006, having a career with the company for over 40 years.
Lynda moved to New York City in 1972. While living in New York, she met and began dating James Lawrence Dunne. The couple were married in 1975. Jim and Lynda were avid travelers and with Lynda’s Delta connections, were known to take last-minute, impromptu flights to destinations all over the world. Lynda would often quip that she liked to pop down to the Caribbean whenever she felt a cold coming on. The pair even went to Morrocco for a day to surprise their friend on her birthday.
Lynda and Jim had a son, James Carson Dunne, in 1982. They enjoyed playing golf at Brookville Country Club and spending time at their condominium in St. Croix, USVI. They remained happily married until Jim’s death in 2023.
Lynda was a loving wife and mother. She was kind, nurturing and was quick to open her home and heart to everyone. The warmth and tenor of Lynda’s southern accent mirrored her charming and inviting personality. She enjoyed playing bridge and mahjong with her friends and spoiling the family dog, Artie. Lynda was greatly loved and will be sorely missed.
