Listen to Obituary

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of a devoted father, John Patrick Herbig, on April 24th, 2026. John was born on March 17th, 1976 to the late John Lawrence (Larry) and Suzanne Reid Herbig of Bayville, NY. John is survived by his son John Scott, his daughter Kate Elizabeth, and his son Liam Waitz; his mother Suzanne Reid Herbig; his brother Edward Herbig (Barbara), his sister Julie Heiss (her late husband, David), and his sister Cheryl Buchan (Kenneth); his nieces and nephews– Kelly, Brian, Sean, and Annalee Herbig; Emily, Kyle, and Jack Heiss; Brittany and Brandon Buchan, and his great nieces– Reid, Eleanor, Arlette, and Charlotte.

John graduated from Locust Valley High School in 1994 and went on to earn a degree in management and business from C.W. Post.

John had an infectious smile and a clever sense of humor. His intelligence was often showcased while watching one of his favorite shows, Jeopardy.

John’s life is marked by his achievements. He was an award-winning trumpet player, a skeet-shooting champion, and a triathlete. A lover of the outdoors, John spent much of his time as a bayman, hunting, snowboarding, and waterskiing.

But beyond all else, John’s greatest achievement in his life was his three children, Scott, Kate, and Liam. He was exceptionally proud of them. You were most likely to find him on the sidelines of one of his children’s sports games, cheering them on. On and off the field, he was their biggest fan. John was a dedicated father, from coaching their soccer teams to taking them on adventures, whether it was a boat ride around the bay or a trip to a ski resort. His greatest source of joy was fatherhood.

Although John is gone, he will live in his children’s hearts forever.
