Janet Bellcourt Pomeranz passed away peacefully at home on May 2, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Albany, New York, in 1930 to Lorenzo and Kathleen Bellcourt, Janet graduated from Vincentian Institute in 1948. Following graduation, she entered the Sisters of St. Joseph, where she served faithfully as a nun for more than 20 years.
Janet was deeply committed to education and lifelong learning. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of St. Rose in 1957, followed by both a Master’s degree and Ph.D. in Mathematics and Physics from The Catholic University of America in 1962.
She went on to teach at the College of St. Rose, SUNY Oneonta, and SUNY Maritime, inspiring generations of students before retiring in 1987.
Janet lived a full and adventurous life with her beloved husband, Kal. Together, they participated in marathons, canoe regattas, cross-country skiing excursions, and bicycle races, among many other pursuits. Her enthusiasm for life also led her to compete in Scrabble tournaments, join dance clubs, volunteer with hospice, and lead her local Glen Cove writers’ groups. She will be remembered for her love of nature, passion for travel, and generous spirit.
Janet is survived by 17 nieces and nephews, all of whom considered her an inspiration. She was predeceased by her husbands, Kal and Joe, as well as seven dearly loved rescue dogs.
Janet’s legacy is defined by her devotion to family and faith, and her unwavering dedication to helping others.
