David M. Howell,100, of Glen Head, NY, passed away peacefully at home on April 9, 2026.
Dave was survived by his loving wife Julie, daughter Linda, her husband Case, grandson Keith and son Richard.
Friends are invited to the memorial service at Sea Cliff Methodist Church on Saturday, May 16th, 1 p.m.
Dave grew up in Massachusetts and graduated from Boston University. He met Julie in the library. They enjoyed living in Boston. When they moved to NY for work, Dave adopted his new state as home.
He was proud of a career that included editing the IC Master. Recently, he woke a few times in dream states, concerned about publication details and deadlines. Responsibility for this huge catalogue of computer parts was fitting. Dave was an early adopter of technologies, the first in the family on the internet. Classical music was one of his passions. As he built musical systems in his pursuit of better sound, the size of the speakers or number of wires were never obstacles. Dave was also a church Deacon and learned Excel to help the congregation manage donations.
Dave loved tennis so much he would shovel snow off the court to play. The family dog Max also enjoyed retrieving tennis balls. Dave was hesitant about that addition to the family at first. But, towards the end of Max’s life, Dave gently carried him home when Max’s joints gave out during a walk.
Among Dave’s favorite foods were fried corn, steak, lobster, stuffed green peppers, cake with caramel frosting and jamoca almond fudge ice cream. Refreshing orange juice was his way to start the day. He followed recipes with keen measurements and scientific dedication. The results included the fluffiest pancakes (fold in the beaten egg whites), and sky high lemon meringue pie.
Dave also enjoyed puzzles. Jigsaw and he still did crosswords in 2026. James Bond movies. Tristan and Iseult a favorite opera. On Christmas morning, Dave loved to listen to O Holy Night sung by Enrico Caruso. He also went on hunts for the perfect Christmas tree, joined by Linda in this fervent holiday pursuit.
The family celebration was filled with joy for his milestone birthday last year. He delivered humorous quips until the end. Dave appreciated the warmth and kindness of the caregivers who nurtured him for extra months and days. Much thanks to the Glenwood Landing Fire Department for their prompt and reassuring help during health emergencies. Once, after a fall, when asked if he wanted to get up, Dave replied I think I’ll hang out here on the floor for a while. Dave could also surprise. A few years ago, he unveiled artistic talent, portraying a proud man on a horse with hat during a sip and draw.
Dave lived a full life and was inspired and grateful for the simple luxury of relaxing during a bright sunny day. He and Julie, after doing so much for their children, were able to enjoy many travels to Europe and the Caribbean. They both look forward to seeing each other again.
Flowers can be sent for the Sea Cliff Methodist Church service at 63 Downing Ave. on Saturday, May 16th, 1 p.m. Or, if desired, donations to Glenwood H&L, E&H, Co. are welcome.
