Claudia Wienert Moyne

March 18, 1937 — December 2, 2025

Claudia Wienert Moyne, age 88, died peacefully in her home by the sea in the early morning hours of Tuesday, December 2, 2025.

Claudia was born in Germany in 1937 to Elfrieda (Herta) and Fritz Wienert. She grew up in Germany, the Australian outback, and Niagara Falls, and received a BA degree from Wellesley College and Master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University. In 1963, Claudia married the late John Moyne and they lived for short periods in Washington, D.C., Boston, and Queens before settling in the Village of Sea Cliff on the north shore of Long Island, where she resided for 49 years. She went on to become a beloved teacher and Chair of the Social Studies department at Wheatley High School.

Claudia had two great passions - her family and her community. She and John raised two children, Nicholas and Parvin, and filled their lives with love, books, and the belief that they could do anything they put their minds to. She spoke with her sister, Helgard, almost daily, to share personal news, discuss political events, and receive book and film recommendations. Claudia's home held a constant stream of visitors from around the world, who happily joined her for walks to the beach and cocktails on the terrace.

Claudia held numerous public service positions, including as the first female Mayor of Sea Cliff. For years, Claudia knew every person and tree in the village, and she personally locked the gate to the beach each evening. Until very recently, Claudia was a volunteer for the Senior Action Committee and drove other residents - many considerably younger - to their appointments and errands. Whip smart and tireless, Claudia got things done and done well.

Claudia is survived by her two children, Nicholas Moyne (wife Elizabeth Pavlov) and Parvin Moyne (husband Zachary Sturges); her sister Helgard Wienert; and her first cousin Manfred Maikler. She was a beloved Omi to three grandchildren, Lucas and Daphne Sturges-Moyne and Olivia Pavlov-Moyne. Claudia is also survived by her cousins in Germany and by in-laws and dear friends from around the world.

Claudia will be inurned with John, her husband of 50 years, at Saint Luke’s Church in Sea Cliff, NY. A service will be held at Saint Luke’s on December 13, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., followed by a reception. Friends and family are welcome.
