It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Calvin “Cal” Donly, who left us peacefully on October 19, 2025, at the age of 90. Born on August 8, 1935, in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, Cal lived a full and meaningful life, enriching the lives of all who knew him.
Cal’s journey brought him to New York City, where he built an extraordinary career in the field of proxy and shareholder services with Ellen Philip Associates, alongside his beloved life and business partner, Ellen Philip, who survives him. Together, they became pillars of the Shareholder Services Association (SSA) and the Corporate Transfer Agents Association, organizations they helped shape and strengthen for over six decades.
Cal was widely respected in the industry, admired for his integrity, reliability, and generosity. He served faithfully as Inspector of Elections at the SSA’s Annual Meetings, while Ellen served as a director for over 20 years. The pair rarely missed an SSA gathering, and their presence was a hallmark of warmth and professionalism.
Beyond their business and industry leadership, Cal and Ellen’s compassion shone through their remarkable “Party with a Purpose,” an annual holiday event that transformed their office into an art gallery benefiting the Fountain Gallery, an arm of Fountain House supporting individuals living with serious mental illness. Over the years, their efforts raised more than $1.3 million, leaving a lasting legacy of care and community.
Cal is survived by his beloved partner, Ellen Philip, his cousin Arthur (JoAnn) Pushkin, and his niece Kerry Donly. Cal is also survived by his brothers, Lawrence Donly and Llewelyn Donly, and extended family in South Africa. He will be remembered for his warmth, wisdom, and unwavering kindness — a man who made everyone feel valued and seen.
Family and friends will gather to celebrate Cal’s life on Sunday, October 26, from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Whitting Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Cal’s memory to Fountain House, earmarked for the Fountain Gallery, at www.fountainhouse.org.
Though he may no longer walk among us, Cal’s spirit will forever reside in the hearts of those he touched.
